Enrichment of 1 4 CH 4 by Thermal Diffusion for Use in Radiocarbon Dating
نویسنده
چکیده
By means of a thermal diffusion column the range of the radiocarbon dating method can be extended by about 20 000 years. In order to calculate suitable dimensions and operation conditions, a theory of nonlinear enrichment is derived. On the basis of a formula which describes the dependence of the enrichment factor on time and the characteristic values of the column, a concentric column of 11m length was constructed. The enrichment factors obtained for 13CH4 as a function of time (up to 400 h) and pressure (150 —1500 Torr) and for 14CH4 at 740 Torr and up to 1000 h are presented and discussed. A method is described to indirectly determine the enrichment factor in the stationary state and the characteristic time.

The range of the radiocarbon dating method can be extended by about 20,000 years by means of thermal diffusion isotopic enrichment. A description of the Clusius-Dickel type enrichment columns and their operation is given. Prior to enrichment the carbonaceous sample material is combusted to C0 2 and then reduced to CO. The enriched sample is re-oxidized to C0 2 . The combustion-, reductionand ox...
متن کاملPredictable Low Enrichment of Methane Isotopes by Clusius-Dickel Thermal-Diffusion Columns for Use in Radiocarbon Dating Technique*
The inclusion of collective long-range effects in the calculation of the electric microfield distribution shifts previous results calculated on the individual variable basis towards the correlationless Holtsmark distribution. For high values of the cut-off parameter and systems close to the critical density the effect may reach 10 per cent. With increasing number of particles in the Debye regio...
متن کاملUse of uranium^thorium dating to determine past 14C reservoir e¡ects in lakes: examples from Antarctica
The chronologies of many lacustrine records suffer from radiocarbon reservoir effects due to the presence of dissolved `dead' carbon or to slow air^water exchange. Here we use the TIMS uranium^thorium disequilibrium method, in conjunction with AMS radiocarbon dating, to determine the age of lacustrine carbonates and to quantify the past radiocarbon reservoir effect in two Antarctic lakes with d...
متن کاملRadiocarbon Dating of Scrolls and Linen Fragments from the Judean Desert
We report on new 14C measurements of samples of 18 texts (scrolls) and 2 linen fragments from Qumran Caves 1, 2, and 4 and from Na al ever, both in the Dead Sea region. The radiocarbon results are in good agreement with estimates of age based on paleography.
متن کاملCollagen Fingerprinting: A New Screening Technique for Radiocarbon Dating Ancient Bone
Collagen is the dominant organic component of bone and is intimately locked within the hydroxyapatite structure of this ubiquitous biomaterial that dominates archaeological and palaeontological assemblages. Radiocarbon analysis of extracted collagen is one of the most common approaches to dating bone from late Pleistocene or Holocene deposits, but dating is relatively expensive compared to othe...
